"That belongs in a museum!"
This page features items in my collection directly related to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. When Temple was released on May 24, 1984, the hype couldn't have been stronger since it was a sequel, or rather prequel, to one of the biggest cinematic hits of all time.
The release of the film caused controversy due to its violence and dark tone. Because of this licensees stayed away from marketing a strong toy line. Kenner was not involved with this film this time around. Either Kenner did not want to be involved with the film or Lucasfilm wasn't happy with their treatment of the Raiders of the Lost Ark line. LJN picked up the toy license for Temple and only produced three action figures, Indiana Jones, Mola Ram and Giant Thuggee Guard.
In my opinion these figures were a better design than the Raiders figures. The Temple toys were larger and featured a "battle-matic" action feature as well as cool accessories. No playsets or other toys based on Temple were produced. There were prototypes of Willie Scott and Short Round figures made and included in catalogs but they were never released.
The film did produce a number of items to collect outside the toy realm that are just as interesting. Like Raiders, Temple products like records, posters, games, collector glasses and lunchboxes are easily obtainable. It's interesting that Raiders had no collector glasses or lunchbox made, and Temple did, when the two items were very popular to tie in with successful movies or TV shows at the time.
Keep checking back because my collection is always growing. |
